For the last week or so, I have been listening off and on (including right now) to (#108) Elvis Costello ’s new CD, “Secret, Profane, & Sugercane.” An Elvis Costello album is always a pleasure from the lyrics to the guitar playing to the singing. And even though I can’t go into details as this is a G-rated blog, his song “Sulpher to Sugarcane” is a lot of fun, in part because of a Pittsburgh reference.

Punxsutawney Phil’s Predictions – Happy Groundhog Day!
Picture of Punxsutawney Phil Courtesy of Groundhog.org As we begin to tire of winter (enough, already!) we also wait anxiously for the answer to a crucial question: “Will there be six more weeks of winter or will we soon be singing Spring Fever ?” Well, we at Bigelow Tea can’t answer that question, so we’ll defer to the professionals – Punxsutawney Phil and his like-minded brethren. Each year on February 2 nd , Phil (and his geographic network of groundhogs in the United States and Canada) ventures out of his burrow. If he sees his shadow, he scurries back into hibernation for another six weeks; if however, the lovable four-legged muse fails to see his shadow, he will leave his burrow, indicating that spring will soon be sprung! Groundhog Day is celebrated with gusto in many locations, especially in Punxsutawney , Pennsylvania – which, fittingly, was the set location for the 1993 movie Groundhog Day , starring Bill Murray

Would you like to work at the Tea Room?
We’re looking to add a part-time server at the Tea Room. Here’s our perfect candidate – someone who is pleasant, knows how to talk to people of all ages, is not too rough at the edges, is good under pressure, has high energy, is optimistic in their outlook, mainstream in style (no visible tattoos or spiked hair!), is trustworthy, has some prior experience in dealing with people and has a work ethic. In addition, they should be a non-smoker and be able to write and spell. Believe me, we have had people put ‘chocolate mouse’ on the order instead of “chocolate mousse”! We will teach them all about tea but we need them to be someone who can be counted upon to show up, exhibit basic manners and common sense and be someone who genuinely enjoys people and smiles a lot. We’re not looking for a high school student since we are only open during the day. Hours would most likely be 2 – 3 days a week, a combination of weekday and weekend. We’re open 11 am to 6 pm most days so there would be no evening hours. We’ve employed college students, retired professionals, foodies….people from all walks of life. It takes a while to get fully trained so we’re not looking for people who have 2 months to kill or are in-between jobs and would leave us in a few months. If this is you or someone you know – e-mail us at tea@silvertipstea.com .

Tea Thermal from Copco!
No matter how much time I give myself to get out of the door in the morning, it’s always a last minute dash out, which has often precluded me from enjoying my tea on-the-go. If only I could boil the water and steep it on the way without being concerned about dealing with wet leaves or over-steeped tea! So imagine my delight to find a product that would allow me to do so! The good folks at Copco have designed the Tea Thermal and I couldn’t be happier. Not to say that this product is perfect, but it’s the best I’ve found thus far.

Tea Cozies Keep the Party Going
“Never trust a man who, when left alone with a tea cosy, doesn’t try it on!” – Bill Connolly Nothing keeps a party going like a warm pot of tea. Conversely, nothing stops a party like a cold pot of tea. It was this realization that led to the invention and popularity of the tea cozy.

Happy Birthday Lewis Carroll, from Bigelow Tea!
“Take some more tea,” would be the best way to celebrate the anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s birthday, born January 27, 1832. After all, those were the famous words the March Hare spoke to Alice “very earnestly” in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland during what is probably the most famous, certainly the maddest tea party ever .

New Book Explores Tea as a Way of Life
New Book Explores Tea as a Way of Life (from a press release) “Tea tempers the spirit and harmonizes the mind; dispels lassitude and relieves fatigue; awakens thought and prevents drowsiness; lightens or refreshes the body and clears the perceptive faculties,” writes Lu Yu in his Tang Dynasty work, The Classic of Tea, one of the oldest treatises on tea. Author Solala Towler takes this understanding of the benefits of tea to a deeper level. “Tea is an important part of my life
