WUMB #s 111, 108, 107

For the last week or so, I have been listening off and on (including right now) to (#108) Elvis Costello ’s new CD, “Secret, Profane, & Sugercane.” An Elvis Costello album is always a pleasure from the lyrics to the guitar playing to the singing. And even though I can’t go into details as this is a G-rated blog, his song “Sulpher to Sugarcane” is a lot of fun, in part because of a Pittsburgh reference.

Punxsutawney Phil’s Predictions – Happy Groundhog Day!

Picture of Punxsutawney Phil Courtesy of Groundhog.org As we begin to tire of winter (enough, already!) we also wait anxiously for the answer to a crucial question: “Will there be six more weeks of winter or will we soon be singing Spring Fever ?” Well, we at Bigelow Tea can’t answer that question, so we’ll defer to the professionals – Punxsutawney Phil and his like-minded brethren. Each year on February 2 nd , Phil (and his geographic network of groundhogs in the United States and Canada) ventures out of his burrow.  If he sees his shadow, he scurries back into hibernation for another six weeks; if however, the lovable four-legged muse fails to see his shadow, he will leave his burrow, indicating that spring will soon be sprung! Groundhog Day is celebrated with gusto in many locations, especially in Punxsutawney , Pennsylvania – which, fittingly, was the set location for the 1993 movie Groundhog Day , starring Bill Murray

Happy Birthday Lewis Carroll, from Bigelow Tea!

“Take some more tea,” would be the best way to celebrate the anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s birthday, born January 27, 1832. After all, those were the famous words the March Hare spoke to Alice “very earnestly” in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland during what is probably the most famous, certainly the maddest tea party ever .

25 years! It Just Doesn’t Seem Possible That Much Time Has Passed.

It’s hard to stay in any one place for 25 years without overcoming a roadblock or two along the way. At a recent celebration for my own 25 year anniversary, I was reminded of my own roadblock on the way to 25 years at R.C.

My neighborhood–reasonably affluent; heavily Jewish and otherwise ethnically diverse; and populated with a lot of academics (near two big research universities)–lost its only general-interest bookstore at the end of 2009 as a major chain pulled out. The rumors are that they were losing too much business to the Internet on the one hand and to a bigger store in their own chain down the road and a competitor up the road in two shopping areas with (gasp!) better parking.

A crime writer’s surprisingly uplifting philosophy

Maura McMillan offers an enlightened summary of the Zen-like philosophy of crime writer Charles Willeford : [W]hile the world is filled with beautiful possibilities, all human endeavor is ultimately futile. His reaction, rather than suicide, was to consciously make himself into a person who despaired less; who forgave human stupidity and cruelty when he could, and examined it in his writing when he could not. Some may consider this thinking pessimistic, but I find it inspiring and life-affirming that a person whose life experiences included riding the rails during the Great Depression and fighting in the Battle of the Bulge would reach such a conclusion.

Eating in Pittsburgh.

I’ve been telling you about places I enjoyed eating on my two trips to LA last fall, but I haven’t mentioned any recent hometown dining experiences. (That may tell you how often we eat out at home…) Had dinner last night at the Quiet Storm Cafe in the Garfield/Friendship/Bloomfield Lawrenceville border region (on Penn Avenue).

Green tea health benefits wrap-up

News about the health benefits of green tea just keeps coming, and the flurry has been especially heavy of late.
