"Tea with Patsy Clairmont"

Patsy Clairmont is a Christian writer and speaker whom I got to know many years ago, but I had never read her 1997 gift book “Tea with Patsy Clairmont” until I came across a copy in mint condition for $2.50 at the thrift shop What’s in Store last week. I’ve seen Patsy live and on video and found her a hilarious and yet thoughtful speaker, but I somehow missed getting to know her as a fellow tea lover. I don’t know why this connection didn’t occur to me before, because one of Patsy’s early books was even titled “God Uses Cracked Pots.” In “Tea With Patsy Clairmont,” she says she has “discovered that many women relate to feeling fragile and broken

Exploring the impact of Fairtrade in South Africa #3

Fairtrade Foundation’s Jess Gordon reports from Cape Town on a Fairtrade producer/worker impact study being planned It became clear from my conversations with some of Heiveld’s members during the day that Fairtrade really does seem to be having a real positive impact on their lives, whether it be through their increased financial returns through access to international Fairtrade markets and a guaranteed Fairtrade Minimum Price for their tea, long term trading relationships with Fairtrade buyers (such as Equal Exchange and Alter Eco), support towards organisational development, or use of their Fairtrade Premium funds to construct a tea court and purchase tractors and tools. The long journey back to Cape Town that evening gave me plenty of time to reflect on our Heiveld visit and what I’d learned that day.

Exploring the impact of Fairtrade in South Africa #2

Fairtrade Foundation’s Jess Gordon reports from Cape Town on a Fairtrade producer/worker impact study being planned My first few days here this week were mainly spent interviewing and evaluating potential research teams who’d submitted tenders to carry out the research study. We want to contract a local South African research team as they’ll be suitably equipped to understand the local context, cultures and environment in which Fairtrade is operating here.

And the winner is…

The 2009 Fair Trade Certified Cupping Competition concluded with a joyous and emotional awards ceremony in Belo Horizonte , Minas Gerais, Brazil. Over 200 producers attended the awards ceremony, eager to learn who among them would walk away with an array of prizes and the honor of placing high among their peers in the coffee quality competition.  Also in attendance were representatives from project partners Sebrae-MG, Wal-Mart, US AID and TransFair USA.  It was a special honor to have the presence of Lisa Kubiske , Charge dÁffairs  A.I.

Teacup ornaments for the birds

Cracker Barrel is a restaurant chain I like just fine, but I associate it with “dining while traveling” and often forget I have one right here in my town. I know they’ve long had great gift items in their gift shops, but I did not know they carry teacup ornaments until my friend Angie alerted me last week! I love the birds and the saucers’ ruffled edges on these teacup ornaments, but most of all I like the sentiments! “May Peace be more than a season.” Yes! And “Let Heaven and nature sing!” So if you happen to be traveling and stop by a Cracker Barrel in the days ahead, you might want to look for these fun little ornaments.

The Iris Book – The Photobook album… but not as you know it.

"Afternoon Tea" by Ellen Easton

Among the tea goodies in the gift package I received from Bernideen was the book “Afternoon Tea: Tips, Terms and Traditions” by Ellen Easton. I was especially pleased to win this book, because for years I’ve seen the name “Ellen Easton” regarded as a top tea expert, yet I’ve never been able to find one of her books! This small paperback (from 2006 ) was a delight to read, and I like the fact there is information for newcomers to afternoon tea as well as those of us who have been enjoying the afternoon tea ritual for years

Discussion: Abandoned books

I don’t write a DNF review for a book unless I’ve read about half of it, but there are loads more books that I’ve tried to read and ended up abandoning before the halfway mark. Generally I try to give a book a decent shot before giving up, but sometimes a book is so bad, or so boring, or just so not for me that I have to get rid of it quickly before I waste more of my time. I don’t feel any guilt for abandoning a book, but sometimes I do feel weird because the book I’ve abandoned might be one that has been given a lot of good reviews.

Fun Updates, A Happy Thanksgiving and a Comment or Two!

Business then fun!  Okay, this month is so kick butt I think I should retire on a high note…..it is record breaking! Many of us who have been here for 20 plus years have not seen anything like it….I feel so blessed! Okay now for a fun note (not that the other was not fun)….I am trying to get the two Vice Presidents on the scale -so far only one will get on (yes the one I said I was banking on).  He lost three pounds but the other one, well it is not looking good.  I made this Wednesday a “mandatory” weigh in day.

Exploring the impact of Fairtrade in South Africa

Fairtrade Foundation’s Jess Gordon reports from Cape Town on a Fairtrade producer impact study being planned I’ve travelled to Cape Town this week to help set up a Fairtrade producer impact research study being overseen by the Fairtrade Foundation in partnership with the South African Fairtrade Network (SAFN). The aim of the research study is to assess to what extent Fairtrade is benefiting producer organisations and farm workers on Fairtrade certified farms in South Africa, with a focus on how Fairtrade can deepen its impact and support these groups more effectively in future. The study will incorporate a number of case studies covering a range of products (wine grapes, citrus, sub-tropical fruits such as peaches and rooibos tea) as well as different regions, farm sizes and structures, in order to reflect the diversity of Fairtrade certified producers that exist here.

Our favorite Tea Book

Of all the tea books we’ve come across, the one we love best and recommended most was a little book called, “Serendipitea, a guide to the varieties, origins, and rituals of tea” by our good friend, Tomislav Podreka.  It was published in 1998 and quickly went out of print.  Happily, it has just been reprinted and we got them in yesterday.  We’ve put it on the website and it will be in the Tea Room today.  It’s a great little book – an easy read, informative, fun and full of facts, recipes and anecdotes to please everyone.  There are other more definitive books but this one is the one we put on top of our list.  If you order online , we’re offering it with a complimentary 2 ounces of Serendipitea, the tea – a Sencha Green with Wild Pineapple, Papaya and tropical flavor and at a great discount.  You won’t regret it!
