Why Your Black Tea Tastes So Lousy
By William I. Lengeman III You could safely say that black tea is the old warhorse of the tea world, that it still reigns supreme in many parts of the Western Hemisphere. While green, oolong and various other teas have begun to make inroads here recently, black is still the one most people in this part of the world probably have in mind when they hear the word tea

Cranberry Sauce Cookies
This week between Christmas and New Year’s is one of my favorite times of the year, mainly because it’s a quiet, no-pressure time at work and home when I have nothing I simply *must* get done. For that reason, I had time over the weekend to ponder whether it would be possible to use leftover cranberry sauce in a cookie and I discovered that indeed you can

Jasmine
Recently, we’ve become aware of just how popular Jasmine tea is. We’ve extolled its praises for quite a while and said repeatedly that the Silver Needle Jasmine is the best jasmine we’ve ever tasted (pictured here with jasmine pearls). But it’s now finding its way into blends that are surprising. One of our regular customers just wrote to me in a Comment in our previous blog, ‘Season’s Greetings’ that she blends it with Rooibos. Rooibos? I never even considered that! I’ve blended it with a Darjeeling to make a wonderful tea called “Remembrance” that’s in our tea catalogue. And our Rickshaw Oolong is a lovely Oolong with a hint of jasmine – our version of a Chinese restaurant tea

Season’s Greetings!
Hope everyone had a great Christmas! We sure did. We closed the Tea Room and the office early on Christmas Eve. I stopped by the Tea Room on the 24th and saw some of our regular customers and was able to wish them all a Merry Christmas. Jacque was hard at work making last-minute custom gift baskets for several customers and I filled bags of tea as fast as I could. Favorites were Earl Grey, Rooibos Afrikana, Cranberry Orange and Chai. One gentleman came in to request the base for Chai tea and then asked us where he could get the spices. He was overjoyed to hear we had Chai already pre-blended and mixed and he quickly changed his order. Today is a busy day at the Tea Room. It is a rainy, blustery sort of day in New York and what better way to spend it than in the warmth of our Tea Room. All those gift certificates that were purchased…I’m sure we’ll see a few of those used today. And an added bonus to the day – it’s my little poodle’s birthday – Happy Birthday Silver! I have some freeze-dried ice cream treats planned for him. Related posts: Christmas & Chocolate Chai – Spiced Tea Saturday Celebrations – 9th Anniversary

Tea Tasting Saturdays #56, 57 & 58 – Puerhs
If I didn’t already have another 52-week tea project in mind, I would probably be a bit sad about writing today’s post! I simply cannot believe it has been a year since I began this tea-tasting project inspired by the 58 teas in “The Harney & Sons Guide to Tea” by Michael Harney. It was more enjoyable and enlightening than I had imagined, and I was pleasantly surprised I was able to find every tea or a reasonable substitute. What have I learned

We add it to our tea, and the combination of 100% natural tea and real pomegranate juice is simply marvelous – which is why Bigelow Tea calls it Pomegranate Pizzazz® . While in the middle of the holiday season (which usually means family, friends and coworkers getting together for cocktails and appetizers), try this “Naugh-tea” drink as a fun twist on the traditional martini

Christmas & Chocolate
Our warehouse/logistics partners sent us a huge gift basket of Godiva chocolates. There was a small tussle to see who tore into it first! I guess they know what we like. Our landlord, Mack-Cali also sent us a magnificent box of solid milk and dark chocolate with their logo on each piece. Very classy! We’re not quite as well-planned and prepared. Our gifts will be delivered with New Year’s greetings! We’re almost done with our Christmas rush of orders and today is the last shipping day and believe it or not, people are still ordering. Our Tea Room is very busy with customers buying last minute gifts, lots of loose leaf teas and numerous gift certificates. We sent over reinforcements a little while ago – both teas and people to help out. We’re open every day but Christmas although we will close early tomorrow. One particular gentleman has visited us every year for the past 6 years almost as we’re closing the doors on Christmas Eve with a request for gift baskets for his mother and sister. We have a bet to see if he will come each year. So far, we’ve won. Let’s see if he keeps up the routine this year. Merry Christmas to everyone.

Christmas at Holly Cottage Tearoom
On Saturday, my longtime tea friend Beth and I celebrated Christmas together by enjoying the “Holly Cottage High Tea,” a three-course event at our beloved Holly Cottage Tearoom in Newnan. Both of us have been to tea there quite a few times since it opened in September, but neither of us had ever taken time for the High Tea, or as my husband calls such occasions, “the Full Meal Deal.” I thought I’d share a few photos of foods we enjoyed along the way, including the famous knot rolls (served with sweet heart-shaped butter pats) made by Chef Linda Rivers. Beth loves their Monk’s Blend, and I am currently on a peppermint kick and ordered the peppermint herbal tea

Green Tea May Help Elderly Cheer Up
Green tea may help the elderly feel better mentally, reports the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in a December 2009 article. The Journal reported on a study from Tohoku University Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering in Sendai, Japan. The study found that elderly men and women consuming 4 or more cups of green tea had 44% less chance of having depression symptoms.

The Weather Outside Is Frightful
By Stephanie Hanson Here in Northern Virginia, the snow is coming down like we haven’t seen in at least a decade, at least in my uneducated opinion. The snow is well over my knees, and well, we just aren’t used to that here. That might be the way things go up north, but here, we aren’t much north of the sweet-tea line.

Scripture Tea
Last night, several girlfriends and I went to Atlanta to see an advance screening of “The Young Victoria,” which I highly, highly recommend! Emily Blunt was great as the young queen who gave her name to an era, and those of us who love the royals anyway will be absolutely smitten with the lush cinematography, beautiful costumes, lovely sets (but hey, they were castles!), fine acting jobs …

The $2,500 bottle of green tea
That is a lot to pay for a bottle of green tea. Not only are quality greens available for much less [ hint, hint ], but green tea’s free-radical-fighting catechins begin breaking down soon after brewing, which is why freshly brewed tea is so much healthier for you. (Bottled teas that tout their high EGCG content, for instance, have boosted the catechin artificially.) Billed as “the green tea you enjoy in a wine glass.” —Mellow Monk blog feed , reviews , teas , twitter , videos
